Styles of Gazebos

May 29th, 2010

Gazebos are a great way to add an attractive shaded sitting area to your outdoor space. A gazebo is an open sided, roofed structure that is commonly used in parks and other private areas, as well as private homes. Gazebos act as a rest area, providing shelter from rain, shade from the sun and adding architectural interest to a garden area.

There are several different styles of gazebos, originating from different countries. You can choose a style that will suit your garden and house. Asian style pavilions look great in a Chinese or Japanese themed garden and were traditionally situated next to a pond or small lake, or sometimes on a small island within the lake, adding to the relaxing feel. Balinese bale style gazebos are traditionally made from bamboo with a thatched roof and raised off the ground, providing a safe comfortable sleeping place for afternoon naps away from insects and snakes and positioned to make best advantage of the cool breezes coming off the rice fields. A Balinese style gazebo will fit in well in any tropical themed garden.

Western style gazebos as found in England and North America are built sturdier to provide shelter from the rain as well as shade in the summer. They are commonly built from bricks and wood and have a roof made from roof shingles or tiles to match the surrounding buildings. » Read more: Styles of Gazebos

Finding Good Garden Plaques

May 8th, 2010

There are many ways to decorate an outside yard or garden, and one way to add a different look to the outside is to choose among the many great garden plaques that are available.  Garden plaque is a general term that encompasses a wide variety of designs.  Engraved rocks, metal memorial plaques, sign plaques, or even hanging plaster casts are all examples of the different styles and type of outside decorative choices available.  While many people think about hedges or carefully manicured flower beds, those are things that every lawn and garden can have.  A quality personalized garden plaque can add that special touch that just can’t be matched.

There are many ways to go about deciding what design or format works best for you.  Having a building or shed close by, or perhaps a couple of brick columns, make a metal plaque an attractive choice.  These can be custom engraved, acting as a memorial to a passed away family member or friend, or it can have a favorite Bible verse, poetry quote, or anything else along those lines that you want.

If this doesn’t seem like an obvious option, consider that there are many types of garden plaques that are designed as engraved landscaping rocks.  These can fit in almost any garden, whether it’s a food garden or a flower garden.  These rocks can be dark gray like granite, or a bright  white with letters either engraved, or a metal plate attached. » Read more: Finding Good Garden Plaques
