An outdoor fie pit can be a great addition to any back yard or outdoor living area. With fall quickly approaching, home coming football games, and Halloween parties you might consider adding one to your backyard landscaping. Today more and more people are utilizing outdoor fire pits as both a great place to sit, relax and enjoy a few drinks as well as an alternative to cooking on a grill. There are many different types of firepits to choose from allowing you to incorporate them into your patio or have set off by themselves in the backyard.
While you can make an easy fire pit out of an old rim or metal barrel there are many prefab cast iron fire pits available at your local home improvement stores. Some are quite elaborate in their decorations and may include additional features such as built in grills, trays to catch the ash and screen covers to keep sparks from getting blown around the neighborhood. While the freestanding fire pits with screen covers are nice for mobility I prefer a more static type of fire pit set away from the house that can be bricked in to make an extra patio and seating area.
Keep in mind that if you live in town there may very well be local regulations that determine the type of outdoor fire pit you can have. Some cities and villages may not allow you to have any type of outdoor fireplace or pit at all. Fortunately, I live outside of city limits and bonfire parties around a fire pit are quite common throughout our neighborhood.
Before burning anything outside in your new fireplace make sure to become familiar with proper fire safety. Don’t burn trash, treated lumber, plastics or other materials that can create harmful fumes. You should only burn properly seasoned firewood or charcoal. Teaching your children about the hazards of an outside fire should also be high on your list of priorities. An outdoor fire pit can be a great way to introduce proper fire building techniques to your children much like they would learn in boy scouts or girl scouts.
