Gentlemen Of Golf

It is still the same game

In the beginning, over a hundred years ago, golf was known as a gentleman’s game. While that is pretty much still true, the rules of the game have not changed much, the term “gentleman” just doesn’t mean the same thing. Benjamin Franklin retired at the age of forty five, a wealthy man, to become a gentleman. Back then being a “gentleman” meant that your were wealthy enough to not have to work, you could spend all of your time doing whatever you wanted, and playing the game of golf was for the wealthy “gentleman”. Today, however, being a “gentleman” simply means that you are older and polite to others in public.

The game of golf has remained the same, played by gentleman, and it still cost more to play than the average Joe can afford. The problem is that, at one time or another, we need to remind ourselves that golf is a game for gentlemen. We should conduct ourselves as such, and leave the shenanigans for the guys that sit on the couch and talk about how easy the game of golf is, They couldn’t hit the ball straight if their lives depended on it. This seems to be the problem, today more than ever. With pros that make the game like it is easy, a lot of people think that the game really is easy.

I was the same way 20 years ago before I picked up my first club. I spent at least 4 days a week at the driving range for 3 months before my friends would let me play with them on » Read more: Gentlemen Of Golf
