So you have decided to erect a carport on your property.  Congratulations!  No doubt you will be glad that you have a structure on your property that will protect your vehicle and give you additional storage for your possessions.  Below we have compiled a checklist that will help you purchase and erect the best carport for your needs.

Here is the checklist:

•    Check whether or not you require planning permission to erect a carport on your property.  You may not need planning permission, but it is best to check this with your local planning office before you purchase a carport.
•    Consider if you want to build your carport from scratch, or purchase a carport-lit and have it delivered to your home.  There are advantages to each, but unless you are some way proficient at building, it may be easier to go for the carport-kit option.
•    Consider if you want a stand-alone structure or a lean-to carport.  This is a matter of personal choice for you to decide on.
•    Decide what quality of material you want your carport to be made of.  Carports can be made of many different materials with aluminum framed and steel framed carports being popular options.  An aluminum carport will be cheaper and lighter.  If you are in a location that may experience harsh weather conditions a lighter framed carport may be inadvisable.  A steel framed carport will be more durable and have a longer lifespan.
•    Begin your search for a carport online.  You may in the long run purchase your carport from a local trader, but looking up carports online will give you ideas as to the prices being quoted for carports and what is available.
•    Consider the shipping costs of your purchase.  If you are purchasing online the manufacturer could be located far from you, so shipping costs have to be taken into account.
•    Construct a solid base for your carport before it arrives as this will help to make your carport a more solid structure.
